Sometimes its is all about context and circumstances.

I had a great conversation today about philosophy and change management, bringing in my experience as an athlete coach where we “create the environment, where success is inevitable”.

I wonder if we sometimes focus too much on the people, objects, subjects of change rather than the context. We look at signs, symbols, reward mechanisms and labels (like manager, leader, change-agent etc.) we create a ranking of artefacts ROI & VFM and competition of people [good, better, best] as if some elements are more valued or valuable than others.

Sometimes it is not about the events, but what happens in-between. It isn’t about the people pre-se, but the relationships, it’s not the speech but the effect. I wonder if it is more about process and context, “the stuff in-between”. Some might argue for egoless / selfless approach rather than focus upon skills, qualifications, charisma and dynamism.

We can change a frog by turning up the temperature of the water (to boiling) and we see chameleon change as a result of environment change. Farmers don’t make carrots grow with leadership pep talks or motivational speeches – they just ensure all the prerequisites are there for success, and importantly, know what those prerequisites are in the right balance.
