Reflections from a Walking Conversation: Because Thinking is a Journey
A Stroll with Purpose
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of embarking on a long walk with Trudi Roscouet, a remarkable woman who was nominated last year as Inspirational Woman of the Year. From the moment we started, it was easy to see why she had earned such an accolade. Trudi embodies boundless energy and enthusiasm, a beacon of optimism in every step she takes.
The Power of Enthusiasm
Trudi’s passion is infectious. As we walked, she shared stories of her various projects and initiatives. It became clear that she doesn’t just talk about making a difference—she lives it. Her enthusiasm is not just about her own achievements but also about inspiring and uplifting those around her. Whether it’s through community projects or personal interactions, Trudi is always eager to contribute positively.
Optimism in Action
One of the most striking aspects of Trudi’s character is her unwavering optimism. In a world often clouded by negativity, her positive outlook is refreshing and motivating. She approaches challenges with a can-do attitude, turning obstacles into opportunities. This optimism fuels her actions and propels her forward, making her a true role model for anyone striving to make an impact.
A Life of Purpose
Our conversation revealed that Trudi is not just active but purposeful in her endeavors. She is always keen to be doing something meaningful—whether it’s helping someone in need, initiating a new project, or advocating for a cause she believes in. Her life is a testament to the idea that true fulfillment comes from making a difference in the lives of others.
Living by Your Own Narrative
One of the themes of our conversation was the extent to which people live by others’ narratives rather than their own. We often make judgments based on what others think or say, or what we believe they might think or say, rather than listening to our own voice.
The Culture of Comparison
We live in a world where competition encourages comparison. Society pressures us to fit in, leading to further comparisons between what we are doing and what is deemed socially acceptable, beautiful, or worthy of celebration. The challenge is that if you constantly live according to others’ standards or your expectations of those standards, you won’t achieve self-satisfaction. Trying to meet unrealistic social expectations is a path to frustration.
The Impatience of Modern Life
One of the challenges of modernity is that people are impatient. We are often asked to do more with less, to be more productive, and to achieve more. This relentless pursuit of “more” is unnatural. The timescales we impose are artificial, whereas nature operates on seasons and years. We have a false idea of what we should be, what we should do, and how long it should take.
Consistency Over Intensity
Reflecting on my experience teaching spinning classes, I used to say, “The body you have at 80 is the one you built at 40.” This underscores the importance of routine and repetition. Little and often, Zone 2 training is all that’s needed for a healthy, happy lifestyle. You don’t have to push yourself to the brink of exhaustion. High-performance athletes, especially endurance athletes, spend a lot of time training at a comfortable pace, often with friends. The misconception that training is always grueling is simply not true.
Triathlon: More Than a Sport
Being a triathlete is not just a sport; it’s a lifestyle. This lifestyle brings both positive and negative aspects, but it almost becomes an identity. As a triathlete, you make choices that align with your goals, such as avoiding unhealthy foods or alcohol. These choices are not sacrifices but part of the preferred way of living. It’s not a trial to be endured but a fulfilling lifestyle.
Embracing Your Environment
The mindset required for success in any endeavor is crucial. Just like the SAS in the jungle, the key is to see the environment as home, not as a threat. This perspective applies to health, fitness, and mindfulness. If you view these as temporary challenges, you won’t make lasting changes. True transformation happens when you integrate these practices into your life.
Finding Your Sport
There is a sport or activity for everyone, regardless of physical attributes. It doesn’t have to be traditional sports; activities like gardening or labor-intensive work can be just as effective. The key is to stay active, whether it’s jogging with a friend, cycling, or swimming. Make it enjoyable and do it with people you like. When you love what you’re doing, and you’re clear about your motivations, you are on the path to happiness.
The Path to High Performance
For those aspiring to high performance, alignment and congruence with your goals are essential. If you find joy in your activities, whether it’s cycling, swimming, or running, you’re more likely to excel. While you may not always be satisfied with your results or the milestones you achieve, if the activity itself brings you happiness, you are on the road to high performance.
