I’ve been invited to delve into the concept of an “intellectual curry house.” This idea emerged from a discussion about my appreciation for a diverse blend of interests, cultures, experiences, and flavors, much like the ingredients of a curry that come together to create a rich, complex, and satisfying dish. This concept aligns with the Japanese idea of ikigai, which represents the intersection of what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. It’s a fascinating way to look at life, integrating work and personal passions instead of seeing them as two ends of a spectrum.

At the heart of the intellectual curry house are themes of change, personal agency, and the ability to influence our lives and the world around us. My interests span philosophy, psychology, leadership, change management, and coaching. I’m also drawn to the realms of business, charity, social enterprise, and sports, where I’ve found success as a triathlete, rower, and coach. My approach focuses more on enhancing performance through motivation and feedback rather than just technical advice.

Many of these interests, while not directly commercial, have been passionate pursuits of mine. The goal now is to explore how these elements can be combined in a way that others find valuable, enjoyable, and worth contributing to.

One way I’ve shared these interests is by curating TEDx St. Helier and participating in various community and charitable projects. This journey is about defining the intellectual curry house and inviting others to contribute their ideas and perspectives. I’m particularly interested in how we think, feel, act, and grow, drawing inspiration from the concept of the Hero’s Journey as a narrative of personal development.

What would you add to this intellectual curry house?
