From Ideas to Action: Sparking Jersey’s Future Together
Two groundbreaking events. One powerful question: What can we do, right now, to transform Jersey’s future? Let’s turn hope into action.
TEDx and the Islands of Longevity remind us that while ideas inspire, it’s the steps we take today that will shape tomorrow. Join the movement.
I recently attended the Islands of Longevity Conference, which was incredibly exciting and filled with promise for the future. The diverse range of speakers and the fantastic turnout from all sectors of the community left me optimistic about the growing appetite for change, collaboration, and opportunity.
I’m also thrilled to be attending the TEDx conference this weekend, marking ten years since I curated TEDx events in 2014 and 2015. I’ve had the privilege of offering modest support to the organizers of the 2025 event, who have done an outstanding job curating a fantastic lineup of speakers. This year’s TEDx promises to be an inspiring event, brimming with bold ideas and exciting visions for the future.
It’s truly a stroke of good fortune to have both of these events—focused on Jersey’s future potential and the opportunities for our community—happening in the same week. But is it just coincidence? Have we reached a tipping point where we’re ready to say enough is enough and demand change? These events seem to reflect a growing desire for progress, collaboration, and action—an energy that was palpable in the audience participation and support.
Looking back, the themes from TEDx events ten years ago are strikingly similar to those today. Reviewing some of the past videos—which I’ll link in the comments section—many could have been filmed yesterday; they are still highly relevant and important. It’s fascinating to consider how the world has changed over the past decade—through the challenges of COVID, climate change, and shifts in global leadership. And yet, many of the issues we faced back then remain the same: education, housing, health, community, and leadership.
What stands out is the balance between continuity and transformation. While new technologies and possibilities emerge, there remains a gap between their potential and the reality of how they impact our everyday lives. Perhaps it is this disconnect that drives such conferences—to explore how we can better leverage the opportunities before us and take control of our future prosperity and purpose, rather than simply becoming workers driven by productivity alone.
I’m curious to see if the level of audience participation at both the TEDx and Islands of Longevity events will mirror each other, as the topics, ambitions, and dreams overlap. However, what’s most important is moving beyond hope, ambition, and dreams to action. The true transformation comes not from attending events, but from adopting new habits in our daily lives. Simple actions—whether with family, colleagues, or community—are the real catalysts for change.
These events are informative, inspiring, and useful. But the real benefit lies in how they can transform lives—through better knowledge, a sense of well-being, and, most importantly, through action. Transformation is not just about grand gestures; it often happens through small, incremental steps. In my experience, momentum is the key to change. The speed at which we move is less important than the direction in which we’re headed. As long as we’re moving forward—physically, mentally, and creatively—we are flourishing.
So, for all those who attended or followed the Islands of Longevity, I invite you to join us at TEDx. For those attending both events, let’s think about how we can create meaningful change—not just for ourselves, but for our families, friends, community, and island. The movement for change starts with each of us. Let’s take action and make it happen.
